The Nyadire Connection is established to serve  the Nyadire Mission in Zimbabwe. Our objective is to maintain an ongoing relationship with the people who live and work at the mission and to provide needed supplies and equipment to sustain operations of the mission. This includes support of Volunteer In Mission trips to Nyadire. Contact Drew Harvey 412-344-3684 or Sara Dickey x 42 to be involved.

Deep within the rural landscape of Zimbabwe, 8400 miles away, in southeastern Africa, you'll find Nyadire United Methodist Hospital (NUMH) and a small United Methodist mission station. It is supported by members of Christ United Methodist Church (CUMC) in Bethel Park, Pa. and partnering churches from the Pittsburgh District of the Western Pennsylvania United Methodist Conference. Through the 240-bed hospital and surrounding clinics, healthcare is provided to approximately 500,000 men, women and children within the immediate service area, and approximately 150,000 patients each year.

Currently the hospital serves as a beacon of hope in a country challenged by hunger, drought,  a struggling economy, and infectious diseases. Although the hospital continues to function, it and many of the facilities required for housing the dedicated clinical staff are in need of repair.

Our Mission is to:

Improve Health

HIV/AIDS is ravaging the country. An estimated 2,500 men, women and children die of HIV/AIDS-related illnesses every week. The average life expectancy for this quarter of the population is age 35.  The Mission  Team includes healthcare pro-fessionals to help train nurses and patients in prevention and care of AIDS and other infectious diseases.

Nurture Children

One of the most unfortunate outcomes of the AIDS epidemic is that today there are more than 800,000 orphans throughout Zimbabwe. Members of the Mission Team will be focused on enhancing health, education, and play environments for children.

Reach out to Villagers

Each day hospital outreach nurses drive to surrounding villages to provide immunizations and clinic-based care in hard-to-reach areas. There are  24 different village sites to visit every week.  The Mission Team will deliver educational materials and clinical supplies to outreach nurses and villagers, along with new tools for enhancing communication with the main hospital.
The hospital’s vehicles are critical for the mission of the hospital. The two working vehicles are used for the outreach program, transferring patients to the city hospital, hauling supplies and making ambulance runs.  Given the poor road system, these vehicles are often in need of repair. The Mission Team will include individuals who have skills in repairing vehicles.

The purpose of the journey is to sustain their mission

(KDKA) PITTSBURGH    (September 2007)  The charitable group "Brother's Brother" is helping countries in need around the world. This week they are sending out shipments worth $150,000 in pharmaceuticals, medical and relief supplies to Zimbabwe.

This is part of an effort to provide aid to 13 countries over the next four weeks, including hurricane ravaged Jamaica, Honduras and Nicaragua as well as Peru, which was damaged by an earthquake.

Contributions came from individuals within our church and several others, the Bethel Park schools, several hospitals, a dental supply company and Brother’s Brother.
