MORNING PRAYER, THE LORD’S PRAYER AND CHORAL RESPONSE
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day
our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we
forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not
into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is
the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
THE OFFERING OF OUR GIFTS
SCHUMANN
We give thee but thine own, whate’er the gift may be; all that we have is
thine alone, a trust, O Lord, from thee.
ANTHEM (9:30)
Borning Cry John Ylvisaker,
arr. D. Kallman
I was
there to hear your borning cry, I’ll be there when you are
old. I rejoiced the day you were baptized, to see your
life unfold. I was there when you were but a child, with a
faith to suit you well; in a blaze of light you wandered
off to find where demons dwell. When you heard the wonder
of the word I was there to cheer you on; you were raised
to praise the living Lord, to whom you now belong. If you
find someone to share your time and you join your hearts
as one, I’ll be there to make your verses rhyme from dusk
till rising sun. In the middle ages of your life, not too
old, no longer young, I’ll be there to guide you through
the night, complete what I’ve begun. When the evening
gently closes in and you shut your weary eyes, I’ll be
there as I have always been with just one more surprise. I
was there to hear your borning cry, I’ll be there when you
are old. I rejoiced the day you were baptized, to see your
life unfold. I was there to hear your cry, to see your
life unfold.

ANTHEM (11:00)
Thomas Matthews
The Lord
is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down
in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of
righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no
evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they
comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the
presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil;
my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall
follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the
house of the Lord forever.

Bates, soloist

SHARING THE DREAM
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to
prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope
and a future.”
Jeremiah 29:11
Your next opportunity to “Share the Dream”
for Christ Church will be in the form of “A Closer Look”
group discussion, based on the feedback received from the
completed Vision Surveys. The final group discussion will
be held at the church on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 p.m.
in the Otterbein Room. The evening will be facilitated by
the Vision Team. Everyone is encouraged to come and
participate. The topic will be as follows:
·
May 14: “A Closer Look: Building & Budget”
Please sign the blue insert or call the
church office to attend.
A CLOSER LOOK: WORSHIP AND ADULT EDUCATION
Worship and Adult Education was the topic for our third “A
Closer Look” Wednesday evening session. We focused our
attention on the important role worship and adult
education plays in our daily lives.
Acknowledging the importance of life-long learning,
suggestions were made about the different types of classes
that would nourish growth and equip us to face life’s
challenges.
We were surprised to learn that sixty percent of people in
South Hills don’t attend church, prompting discussion
about whether we are being intentional about inviting
people to church; and if we are not, why not.
What motivates people to worship, the importance of different
types of worship services, and ways we can make worship
more meaningful were also discussed.
Sign-up to attend this week’s session, “A Closer Look:
Building & Budget”.

sessions, survey results, and the questions discussed,

ABOUT THIS MORNING’S MUSIC
PRELUDE:
The Fantasia super “Komm, Heiliger Geist” comes
from a group of eighteen chorale preludes composed earlier
in Bach’s life and later revised and compiled into a
collection often called the Leipzig Chorales. It is
interesting to compare these revisions from late in Bach’s
life with the early versions, providing a window into how
his compositional practices matured over time. Komm,
Heiliger Geist opens the collection. The exuberance of
Bach’s “fantasy,” with its whirling manual figuration and
full-organ registration, is suggestive of the rushing
winds and tongues of fire of Pentecost. The ecstatic
sixteenth-notes never cease until the final chord,
creating a continuous cascade of sound.
POSTLUDE: Vierne’s Symphony No. 1 in D Minor, Op. 14
(1898-99) remains the most popular of his six symphonies
for organ. The sparkling “Final” makes use of a technique
popularized by Richard Wagner in orchestral music such as
the famous “Ride of the Valkyries” – the melodic material
is placed in the bass register with fast-moving broken
chords in the upper register used as accompaniment. After
this bombastic principal theme, a gentler theme is
presented in canon between the hands and pedal. After a
period of development, both themes return in dramatic
fashion.
